Overview

What is Tax Registration?

e-TIN: Taxpayer Identification Number

The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a unique 12-digit electronic number issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) through its online portal at incometax.gov.bd. It is mandatory under the Income Tax Act, 2023 for every individual, company, and firm operating in Bangladesh.

TIN registration is free of charge from the government. It is required to open a bank account, apply for trade license renewals, participate in government tenders, register property, and file annual income tax returns. Our experts at Aeenx manage your e-TIN application end-to-end.

e-BIN: Business Identification Number (VAT)

The Business Identification Number (BIN), or e-BIN, is a 13-digit electronic identifier issued under the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012. As of 30 November 2019, all old 9-digit and 11-digit BINs became legally invalid. The current e-BIN is issued via vat.gov.bd.

Every VAT-registered business must issue a Mushak 6.3 tax invoice showing the 13-digit e-BIN. An invoice without a valid BIN is legally defective, exposing the business to penalties of up to BDT 10,000 per irregular issuance. Contact Aeenx for hassle-free BIN registration.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TIN registration free of charge in Bangladesh?
Yes, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) does not charge any government fee for e-TIN registration. However, if you hire a professional service provider like Aeenx to handle the application, a professional service fee applies for document preparation and submission support.
What is the difference between TIN and BIN (e-BIN) in Bangladesh?
TIN (12-digit) is issued by the Income Tax wing of NBR for income tax purposes under the Income Tax Act, 2023. BIN (13-digit e-BIN) is issued by the Customs, VAT & Excise Department under the VAT & Supplementary Duty Act, 2012. A company typically holds both — they must never be used interchangeably on tax invoices or returns.
When must a business register for VAT — what is the turnover threshold?
Standard VAT registration is mandatory for businesses with annual taxable turnover exceeding BDT 30 million (3 crore). Businesses between BDT 30 lakh and 80 lakh may opt for a simplified 3% turnover tax enlistment. However, manufacturers, importers, exporters, private/public limited companies, and specific service providers (telecom, banking, digital services) must register regardless of their turnover. Registration must be completed within 15 days of crossing the applicable threshold.
Can a foreign national or foreign company obtain tax registration in Bangladesh?
Yes. Foreign investors, directors, and expatriates earning income in Bangladesh can obtain an e-TIN. They must provide a valid passport, visa copy, and relevant local business registration documents. For VAT registration, foreign/non-resident entities supplying taxable goods or services in Bangladesh must appoint a local VAT agent and register with NBR.
What is the deadline for filing the income tax return in Bangladesh?
The standard income tax return deadline for individual taxpayers in Bangladesh is 30 November of each year. The NBR may extend the deadline by notification — for FY 2024-25, the deadline was extended to 31 December 2024. Missing the deadline results in a penalty of 10% of the last assessed tax (minimum BDT 1,000), and 50% for continued non-compliance.
Is there a penalty for not having a valid e-BIN on a VAT invoice?
Yes, severely. A Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice missing either party's 13-digit e-BIN is legally defective. The NBR can impose a penalty of up to BDT 10,000 per irregular invoice. Additionally, the buyer loses their right to claim input VAT credit on that transaction. Always verify a supplier's BIN is "Active" on the NBR portal before accepting invoices.
